New Routemaster to meet specific environmental targets
Posted by H2O on 2009-03-09 22:34:45 UTC

I recently contacted TfL to see what progress was being made since the 'A New Bus for London' competition was run. Here's what they had to say:

"Regarding the competition, the next steps for Transport for London (TfL) are to develop a full vehicle specification incorporating the best design ideas, and take these forward to procurement. The final design has yet to be specified by TfL and drawn up by a manufacturer although we expect the specifications to set specific targets for a range of environmental and performance features." read more...

President Barack Obama certainly seems to think so. He has called for the US to become energy independent and create a new "green economy".

"We will commit ourselves to steady, focused, pragmatic pursuit of an America that is freed from our energy dependence, and empowered by a new energy economy that puts millions of our citizens to work." read more...

BBC presenter James May performed a road test on the Honda FCX clarity and gave it a resounding thumbs up. Acheiving such recognition from a show based on "petrolhead" culture is a huge achievement for an environmentally friendly car.

TFL to introduce 10 Hydrogen buses and Refeulling station by 2010
Posted by H2O on 2008-06-18 23:46:45 UTC

TFL (Transport for London) has recently commited to further investment in Hydgrogen buses and infrastructure. This is mainly due to the success of the CUTE(Clean Urban Transport for Europe) trial, which tested the first generation of zero-emission fuel cell buses.

More information about the CUTE trial can be found here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/6585.aspx

It is expected that all 10 buses will run on the RV1 route. Five of them will be hydrogen fuel cell buses and the remaining five will use hydrogen internal combustion engines.

This initiative is part of a larger scheme which seeks to have 70 hydrogen vehicles running by the 2012 Olympics. This includes the above 10 buses and an additional 60 non-bus vehicles (ranging from fork-lifts, through motorbikes and passenger cars) to be operated by London's Functional Bodies (TfL, London Fire Brigade and the Met police).
