How a Fuel Cell works

The first question that I'm sure many people will be asking is "what is a fuel cell?". Put simply, a fuel cell operates much like a battery, or to use the technical phrase, an "electrochemical energy conversion device". It combines hydrogen and oxygen to output water and electricity.

However, unlike a battery a fuel cell requires a constant stream of hydrogen and oxygen or else it will stop working. The below diagram illustrates the most commonly used type of hydrogen fuel cell (a PEM fuel cell):
